Introducing the CBR 2203-PEI: A Better Coupon Holder Rod for the CDC Biofilm Reactor
BioSurface Technologies is pleased to announce the release of the CBR 2203-PEI Coupon Holder Rod, a new material variant of the standard CDC Biofilm Reactor coupon holder rod machined from Ultem 1000 polyetherimide (PEI).
The standard CBR 2203 rod has been manufactured from polypropylene since the CDC Biofilm Reactor was introduced. Polypropylene offers a combination of low cost, chemical resistance, and biocompatibility that makes it a practical choice. Over time, however, we have observed a handful of recurring limitations that researchers running long-term or high-cycle experiments are likely familiar with: threads stripping under repeated coupon changes, rods warping or discoloring after extended autoclave cycling, and dimensional drift in coupon seating over time.
Ultem 1000 PEI addresses all of these issues directly. It machines to tighter tolerances, holds threads significantly better under repeated use, and remains dimensionally stable across the full autoclave temperature range. It carries USP Class VI certification and has a well-characterized leachable profile, which simplifies experimental design for researchers who need to account for material contributions when interpreting biofilm data. The natural amber color of PEI also makes PEI rods immediately distinguishable from standard PP rods in a mixed reactor setup.
The CBR 2203-PEI is a direct drop-in replacement for the CBR 2203. No modifications to the reactor or lid are required. It is compatible with all CDC Biofilm Reactor configurations, all standard disc coupons, and all CBR accessories.
The CBR 2203-PEI is available now at $65.00 per rod. Standard CDC Biofilm Reactor kits continue to include CBR 2203 polypropylene rods; PEI rods are available as individual upgrades for existing reactor owners.
