BioSurface Technologies is pleased to announce our newest biofilm reactor: the Bio-inLine Biofilm Reactor. This device is designed to be similar to the Modified Robbins device, but with a few modifications. The chamber is a half-inch diameter, and almost two feet long. It holds up to twelve standard half-inch coupons (same as our CDC Biofilm Reactor, Rotating Disk Reactor, and Coupon Evaluation Flow Cells), of which more than 40 material options are currently available. The discs are held in place by a coupon holder plug, which can be easily removed and sampled at will. The entire chamber has been designed to hold up to 100psi water pressure, and is fully autoclavable.
The idea behind this reactor was to mimic standard pipes and tubing found in homes and drinking water systems. They can be built into a piping system in a lab or out on site, and samples can be taken whenever required, without the need for disassembly of the reactor. The original Modified Robbins Device was first used in biofilm studies as early as 1986 (J. Poindexter, E. Leadbetter. Bacteria in Nature: Methods and Special Applications in Bacterial Ecology. Plenum Press, 1986.). Since then, countless studies have used some version of this reactor. BST wanted to create a reactor using the concepts introduced by the Modified Robbins Device while still being fully autoclavable, and compatible with our other biofilm reactors.
